More Info about Neil (as of July 3rd 2026)
Hi I’m Neil, the elephant seal.
You may have heard about me recently. I’m currently resting on the Tasmanian coast while I moult. To help me recover safely, it’s best not to visit or approach me in person right now. If so many people keep visiting me, I might be forced somewhere I don’t want to go. Instead, please take this souvenir home with you as a special memory of me!
A little about me
I was born in October 2020 on the Tasman Peninsula and now weigh around 1,000 kg. I’ll be ashore for the next 3 to 5 weeks.
Why I’m here
I’m shedding my old outer skin and fur, which is why I need to stay on land. Without my fur, the ocean water is too cold for me right now. I’m not eating while I’m ashore, I’m living off my blubber and getting plenty of rest.
When I’ll return to the sea
I’ll stay on land until my new waterproof coat has fully grown in. After that, I’ll have a long, deep sleep for about 3 to 4 weeks to rebuild my energy before heading back into the ocean to hunt for squid and fish.
If you do see me
Please give me plenty of space so I can rest undisturbed.
Stay at least 20 metres away from me at all times (and 50 metres away if you have a dog). Use your camera’s zoom rather than moving closer. This helps protect both of us. Thank you for respecting my needs.
Love Neil
